Properties
- Blue color, soluble in water, non-flammable, can gives an irritating fume (gases).
- Anhydrous cuso4 is white but Penta hydrate is blue because gives a d-d transition in ligands in solution.
Advantages
- Copper sulfate is used as a fungicide, algaecide, root killer, and herbicide in both agriculture and non-agricultural settings.
- It is also used as an antimicrobial and molluscicide.
Drawbacks
- Using too much copper sulfate in the treatment of plants can also disrupt the process of photosynthesis, harming vegetation.
Application
- In agriculture, it forms the basis for manufacturing the agricultural fungicide Bordeaux mixture and is also used as an algaecide and molluscicide, as well as to correct copper deficient soil.
- Copper sulphate is used as an additive in animal feed to promote growth and correct copper deficiencies in the animals.
- Its many industrial uses include applications as a preservative or additive in glues, paints, leather, synthetic fibers, textiles, hair dye products, fireworks, chlorophyll and wrapping paper for fruit, among others.
